Taiyaki

It's a molded waffle, shaped like a fish.
Sometimes served on a stick, often filled with adzuki 'red bean' paste, chocolate, or other sweet fillings. To make these at home, you'll need a special fish-shaped pan.
Taiyaki Recipe (Japanese Fish-Shaped Pastry)
Ingredients (Makes about 6 Taiyaki)
For the Batter:
- All-purpose flour – 1 cup
- Baking powder – 1 teaspoon
- Sugar – 2 tablespoons
- Milk – ½ cup
- Egg – 1 large
- Water – ¼ cup
For the Filling:
- Sweet red bean paste (anko) – ¾ cup
- Optional: custard, Nutella, or sweetened cream cheese
For Cooking:
- Vegetable oil – For greasing the pan
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Batter
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and sugar.
- In a separate bowl, beat the egg and mix it with the milk and water.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until smooth and lump-free.
Step 2: Heat the Taiyaki Pan
- Preheat a taiyaki pan over medium heat and lightly grease both sides with vegetable oil.
Step 3: Assemble the Taiyaki
- Pour a thin layer of batter into one side of the pan, spreading it to cover the fish-shaped mold.
- Add about 1-2 tablespoons of red bean paste (or your desired filling) into the center of the batter.
- Pour a small amount of batter over the filling to cover it completely.
- Close the taiyaki pan and cook for about 2-3 minutes on one side, then flip and cook for another 2-3 minutes until golden brown.
Step 4: Serve
- Carefully remove the taiyaki from the pan and let it cool slightly on a wire rack.
- Repeat with the remaining batter and filling.
Serving Suggestions
Taiyaki is best served warm and can be enjoyed as a snack or dessert. Pair it with:
- Green tea or matcha latte
- Ice cream for a fun twist
